A Souvenir of Japan

Adoration or obedience? Resentment or respect?
Things aren't always what they seem.

Selfless or Selfish? Elegant or awkward?
Things aren't always what they seem.

Beautiful or tortured? Trashy or chic?
Thing's aren't always what they seem.

Culture and Heritage. Race and Religion.
Things are never what they seem.

I loved they way you decided to respond to this story. Comparisons were a great choice. They defiantly make me stop and really look back at the story as a whole and what these words mean in the story. In my opinion you defiantly came with some comparisons that I don’t think I would have seen right way but, they defiantly fit the story quit well. I definitely like the comparison of trashy or chic. Great job!

Great poem, Jessica!

I especially like how the poem's final couplet departs from the pattern established in the first three couplets.

"Things are never what they seem" is a little dark for the closing line, but then again, this story certainly shows how the narrator faces some "dark moments" in realizing her self identity as "an instrument which would cause him [the lover] pain" (271). The "tortured" image fits nicely with the sentiment the narrator expresses in that passage.

I am a little curious about the "trashy or chic" question. All of the other comparisions I can easily locate within the story. Trashy/chic is not a contrast I noticed, though. Where did you come up with this pair?

This was an interesting way to respond to this story. It captures the thought process of the narrator quite accurately. Some of the comparisons you used are often overlooked and I found it especially intriguing to read your views in the form of a poem. Nice work.
